the practice of trust in one small step

"All truly wise thoughts have been thought already thousands of times, but to make them truly ours we must think them over again honestly, till they take root in our personal experience."

~ Goethe

noticing what's around me, inspired in an instant by a natural composition
nature's composition

You live with a companion. Not a person or a pet, but a vision of something you long to do - a fresh direction, a creative project, a change in career, a new way to live your precious and fast-fleeting years. Ideas and imaginings knock at the door of your mind over and over again, and you respond - 'not good enough', 'impossible to do', 'I have no time', 'how will I live?', 'I'm too old, too young, or ill-prepared'. It doesn't matter how many months or years you've had the idea, how many times you've thought it was time, started then stopped - you wish you had someone to ask - '...what do YOU think?', '..will this work?', '...should I or shouldn't I...?' 'If only someone would tell me...'.

How puzzling. From the beginning and all along, it's your idea, still, your opinion is never quite enough...

Ralph Waldo Emerson put it this way..."Our chief want is someone who will inspire us to be what we know we could be." May I inspire you now, as you read these words?

had to jump out of the car to snap a place of serenity
in sync with simplicity

Those whose opinion you would value, have they walked in your shoes - lived your experience, studied what you've studied, read what you've read, practiced and experimented and delivered in such a way that they 'know' what's really inside of the person you are at this moment in time? Not likely. Not likely at all.

And, when you let your mind wander all the way to the finish line, you turn away - what you see ahead is too big and you don't have the energy, time or motivation for something so demanding. But, is there one small (make it simple) thing you can do now, today, something you have the deep-down wanting to do? Ignore the intruders of the mind telling you 'it won't work', painting the scariest picture of what will come of it, what you'll get out of it, who will like it and who won't. Do the doing and let that be its own outcome. That's all you need for this day - one simple thing.

"But,...", you protest, "...it's already been done.', '...people do this everyday.' - yes, yes, and yes, but is it fair or wise to compare? This isn't someone else's dream, it's yours. Even if 'it' has been done before, 'it' wasn't this, because it didn't come from you, it can't be the same.

One simple step forms the beginnings of the path named hope.

There. Now. Pick up the pen, the phone, the pad. Open the book, the video, the box of paints...

...you see the form as it begins - the colors, the words, the place, the creation.

From your imagination, into the real.

Fabulous.

Austen, yes, we must always strive to go after what we long for. The only things you will regret at the end of your life are the things you did not do and as my dear Mum used to say, the biggest obstacle to anything is in your mind.

Thank you for your wise words...how true. Listening to the book "Essentialism" - the author refers to a clinician who asked patients at the end of their lives, "If you could do this life again, what would you do differently?' - the most consistent reply: "...live a life true to myself, not driven by what others expected of me".

And, oh, yes - the mind - it does get in the way!

Austen, happy to see your blog. It sure hit home with me.

I guess I'm one of the "old" people just too tired , to be as brave and living life to the fullest, like you. I will continue to read this blog over & over in hopes of getting just a piece of your zest for living life.

love & miss you.

Thank you kindly for your note! I wonder if you look closely at your day will you see there was ‘one small thing’ you made better, more beautiful, more inviting than it was when you found it, or perhaps one person whose spirit you lifted with your greeting? Please don’t diminish what you’ve done…
